What are carbon credits?

    A carbon credit represents one ton of carbon dioxide (or equivalent greenhouse gas) that has either been removed from the atmosphere or prevented from being emitted. These credits are generated through climate projects like reforestation, carbon capture and storage, or renewable energy development.

    For a project to issue carbon credits, it must create an additional impact - meaning the project reduces emissions beyond what would have happened without carbon finance. This ensures the environmental benefits are real, measurable, and significant.

  • Carbon Credits Role in Net Zero

    Achieving Net Zero requires balancing emissions produced with emissions removed. While many emissions can be reduced through technology and process improvements, certain sectors - like aviation, shipping, and heavy industries - face barriers due to the high cost or difficulty of full decarbonisation.

    Carbon credits allow businesses to offset these unavoidable emissions by funding projects that capture or reduce carbon elsewhere. This provides a practical pathway to Net Zero without delaying progress in harder-to-abate areas.

    Carbon credits are generated by verified projects that either reduce emissions at the source or capture and store carbon dioxide. Projects are validated and verified by carbon registries, such as Riverse. These standards ensure the carbon savings are real, scientifically accurate, and additional to what would have occurred naturally.

  • Carbon mineralisation stores CO₂ in a stable, mineral forms that remains permanently bound, ensuring storage durations that far exceed traditional methods and effectively removing CO₂ from the carbon cycle for thousands of years.

  • During Carbon8’s recent verification audit, over 7 million lines of data were supplied. The depth of telemetry and information allows us to trace each tonne of CO₂ back to the specific CO₂ntainer & the batches that formulated it, resulting in full traceability of each tCO₂.

  • The CO₂ntainer is a permanent carbon storage solution for any location. It is unbound from the restrictions of identifying, surveying and permitting an underground reservoir for geological storage, expanding scope for heavy industry to access permanent carbon storage.

  • Carbonation is an exothermic reaction, meaning very little energy input is required to store CO₂. The CO₂ntainer has potential to achieve lifecycle efficiencies up to, and occasionally exceeding, 100% when considering carbon avoidance.

  • Carbon8’s direct link to both heavy industry & construction value chains creates a powerful insetting strategy for our credit partners. By purchasing Carbon8 credits, you align and directly support the decarbonisation of heavy industry and construction which are the core of global economies.
