Carbon8 Appoints New Chief Executive: Paul Drennan-Durose

Carbon8, the UK cleantech company that specialises in carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS), and which has EDF Pulse Ventures (the corporate venture capital arm of EDF), as well as French headquartered VICAT SA group as its main investors, has appointed Paul Drennan-Durose as its new Chief Executive Officer.

Paul Drennan-Durose succeeds John Pilkington who becomes Non-executive Chairman; Paul joins Carbon8 with immediate effect.

John Pilkington, Non-executive Chairman at Carbon8 said: “Carbon8’s board and its investors are delighted that Paul is now leading the business. Paul brings to the company a wealth of international board leadership and experience within industry, as well as in private equity and venture capital.”

Carbon8’s CO₂ntainer deployed at the Vicat Group’s cement plant in Montalieu, France.

Paul Drennan-Durose, CEO of Carbon8 said: “With the significant support of two major investors in EDF and Vicat SA, I’m delighted to have joined Carbon8.  Carbon8’s CCUS solution is relevant to heavy industries  seeking cost-effective ways to decarbonise their operations and support the transition to a low-carbon economy.”

Carbon8's CCUS technology captures CO₂ emissions and combines these emissions with industrial waste and residues (including fly-ash and cement by-pass dust) from the same plant to produce carbon negative construction aggregate.  Carbon8’s patented CCUS solution is termed Accelerated Carbonation Technology (ACT) and is deployed via the CO₂ntainer - a modular, containerised solution – described as carbon capture in a box.

Heavy industrial sectors, like cement and paper and pulp, need to adopt carbon capture solutions, like the CO₂ntainer, that are quick to deploy.  Being able to deliver a permanent carbon capture solution whilst offering a sustainable solution to industrial wastes and enabling the circular economy, puts Carbon8 in the frame for those companies seeking to decarbonise their operations.

In addition to securing investment from EDF and Vicat SA Group (in 2022), Carbon8 has achieved a number of milestones over the past three years; these include deploying its technology at a Vicat cement plant in France and at an EFW plant in The Netherlands and establishing business partnerships with FLSmidth and Return Carbon.

About Carbon8

Originally a spin-out from the University of Greenwich (London), has developed and commercialised a technology (Accelerated Carbonation Technology) to help hard-to-abate industrial sectors (including steel, cement, paper & pulp, Energy-from-waste and biomass power generation) to decarbonise, and shift to a more circular operation by converting their residues into assets for commercial use (see below).

In June 2022, Vicat Group, the international cement group, EDF Group and its corporate venture capital arm, EDF Pulse Ventures, co-invested £4m (€4.69m) in Carbon8. In June 2021, Carbon8 and FLSmidth, the international supplier of sustainable solutions and services to the cement industry, signed a global commercial partnership agreement to deploy Carbon8’s ACT in the cement industry worldwide.

Carbon8’s patented technology combines industrial residues with captured CO₂ emissions to produce carbonated products.  The solution is housed in two 40FT shipping containers and is a scalable and modular Plug ‘n Play solution.  The CO2ntainer can be deployed directly to an industrial site, capturing carbon from the point source and permanently storing it in the output materials of the ACT process.  This form of permanent CO2 capture and storage enables heavy industry to better manage their residues, addressing simultaneously their goals of zero landfill and Net Zero emissions. The new materials manufactured in the process are carbon negative lightweight aggregates with applications in the construction industry. Carbon8 is working on developing this product range to different applications, including fertiliser.
